Obama team pushes Florida early voting
Obama team pushes Florida early voting
Mitt Romney was in Florida as early voting started there on Saturday and most of the state's political insiders think he'll win the state, but the Obama campaign is far from ceding the state to the Republican ticket.
Though President Obama isn't due in Florida until Sunday night for a Monday rally -- he's leaving Washington early to avoid the brunt of Hurricane Sandy -- several high profile celebrities and political figures are spending the weekend firing up volunteers and encouraging Obama supporters to take advantage of early voting, as local news reports and photos show long lines at polling places across the state.
Actress Eva Longoria, a national campaign co-chair, is spending the weekend visiting campaign offices throughout South Florida as volunteers kick off early voting canvassing. Hill Harper, the "CSI: NY" actor and law school friend of Obama's, spent Saturday at early vote and canvassing kickoffs across Miami.
"Fresh Prince of Bel Air" star Tatyana Ali is hosting events including a Sunday barbeque in Daytona Beach, while model and "Top Chef" host Padma Lakshmi will be at a Sunday brunch for women in Tampa. Also on hand this weekend: actor Laurence Fishburne, actresses Lynn Whitfield and Adrienne Bailon, and former BET host AJ Calloway.
U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk -- in his personal, not official, capacity -- is attending several events including a meeting for faith-based stakeholders and ministers. Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed, former Rep. Robert Wexler (D-Fla.) and Rep. Nydia Velazquez (D-N.Y.) are also campaigning for Obama in Florida this weekend. Two Floridians, DNC chairwoman Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz and former Republican Gov. Charlie Crist, spent part of Saturday at a DNC bus tour stop in Tampa.
Obama isn’t the only one getting some help this weekend. Romney was joined by Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) and Rep. Connie Mack (R-Fla.), who’s running for Senate in the state, at a rally earlier Saturday in Pensacola.
"You know today is the first day of early voting, so when you're done here today, what are you going to do?” Mack asked the crowd, which shouted back “vote.”
Romney leads Obama by just under 2 points in the Real Clear Politics average of recent Florida polls, but the Obama campaign is confident that its ground game can boost its numbers in the Sunshine State.
In a Saturday memo, national field director Jeremy Bird voiced confidence that Obama would win Florida. "[W]e’re just 10 days away from keeping a key battleground and re-electing President Obama," he wrote, before detailing conditions that he said make the state even stronger for Obama than it was four years ago.
Republicans have historically had an edge in Florida's vote-by-mail program, but Bird said Democrats have been able to cut the GOP lead to a much smaller margin.
At the same point in 2008, 257,000 more Republicans than Democrats had early voted. This year, it’s just 33,500 more. “In a state President Obama won by nearly 240,000 votes, that's a 223,500-vote swing even the dizziest Republican can't spin away,” Bird wrote. Democrats have also cut Republicans’ absentee ballot advantage in half.
All of that, added to state’s demographic shifts – 300,000 new Hispanic voters, 100,000 African American and Caribbean American voters – overwhelmingly favor Democrats. Just 10 percent of the new Hispanic voters have registered as Republicans. In all, the Obama campaign expects minority voters to make up more than 30 percent of the Florida electorate, up from 28 percent in 2008.
UPDATE: The Romney campaign's Florida state director, Molly Donlin, counters that Romney has led in 6 of 7 of the most recent polls of Florida voters. "Florida turned away from President Obama several weeks ago, and OFA has been powerless to do anything about it," she said.
Democrats' gains in absentee ballots from four years ago will, in the Romney campaign's view, come at the expense of early votes, since 23 percent of absentee voters were early voters in 2008. And other numerical advantages that the Obama team sees just aren't there, Donlin said.
Romney, Ann Romney and vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan have done 16 events in the state this month, while Obama, first lady Michelle Obama and Vice President Joe Biden have done just six. "Our campaign is also just plain out-hustling President Obama and OFA Florida," Donlin said, adding: "President Obama simply isn’t competing for Florida as hard as his team would have you believe."
